Detailed Itinerary
The excursion begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Fez. We'll head west through fertile agricultural lands. Our first stop will be the impressive Roman ruins of Volubilis. This was the Empire's most remote outpost and is surprisingly well-preserved. You'll have free time to explore the site, marveling at the spectacular mosaics that adorned the villas of wealthy Roman merchants, the imposing triumphal arch, and the remains of the Capitol and Basilica.
Just a few kilometers away, we'll head to the holy city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Dramatically perched on two hills, the city bears the name of its founder, Moulay Idriss I, great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who brought Islam to Morocco. Although access to the mausoleum is restricted to Muslims, you'll be able to stroll through its streets, feel the devotional atmosphere, and climb to one of the viewpoints for a breathtaking view of the green-tiled sanctuary and the whitewashed city.
After a break for lunch at a local restaurant, we'll embark on the return journey to Fez, arriving in the late afternoon with a deeper understanding of Morocco's Roman and spiritual roots.
